Styling your bedroom can be one of the most fun things to do, but it can also be overwhelming as you can get caught up in all the perfectly styled images in magazines and on Pinterest and it can seem like a task that’s just too big. But it doesn’t have to be! The beauty of it being your home is that you can style it the way you want to.

To start, think about a colour scheme that you love. You don’t have to be super skilled in colour theory to know what you like and what you think will go together well. If you’re nervous, do take a look at some home magazines whilst you’re in the supermarket or do have a look on pinterest just to see which colours and styles are popping out to you that you might like. Also have a think about what wood grain you either already have, or would like as it’s nice if your timber at least matches in colour if not style. (I prefer a light beech timber like the ikea bed side table above.)
The next thing to think about after you’ve written down some colours you wouldn’t mind waking up to (try not to pick anything that will give you an instant headache ;)), is how you will use the room. Yes it will be for sleeping, but will it also need a desk? Will a table or a stool work as your bed side table, or do you need some drawers? Do you have a chest of drawers or do you use a wardrobe? These will help you to decide what you need to buy and also give you an idea of the budget you will need to have.
It’s also a great idea to think about the layout of the room and how you’d like it to be before you head out and buy anything. Here’s a tutorial on how to create a floor plan for your home or any room in it, that might be helpful to you. If you have limited space, have a think about what options you might have for using that space as best you can. There are containers that are great for under-bed storage and some compact wall systems that might work for your home.
Have a look around your room as it currently is and ask yourself what you’d most love to change. If you’re pretty happy with it, a new quilt cover and some cushions might be all it needs. Or some new artwork on the walls. But if you’re feeling like it could do with a big change, make it something that you will add to your budgeting over time, and make some plans to change it when you can.
A new lamp or new colours can dramatically change the look and feel of a room, so don’t discount them in favour of something so big it might end up on the never-never. (I have so many projects that end up like this, I’m trying to reign them in to something achievable – sometimes easier said than done). Sometimes it can be as little as adding a vase and some flowers and remembering to open the curtains that will make it feel like a more welcoming place to be.
Have you styled your bedroom? What’s your number one tip for anyone who wants to give it a go? I’d love to hear.

I love that clock and the Quilt cover. I’ve ben looking for a chevron in blue. Bedrooms can be tricky when you are balancing out the husband and myself – and not make it too pretty.

Yes, not making it too pretty can be a challenge! Will keep my eyes peeled for a chevron in blue for you!
