With the tutti fruity theme selected for my upcoming birthday, I have been thinking of more practical and fun ways to keep the theme going and have some fun crafting too. I had this cool idea to make some fruity bowls that can be used on the day and for a long time after! I decided that pineapples and strawberries would make fun designs and here’s how you can make them too! Spotlight have kindly sponsored this post and at the bottom we have a great giveaway that you should enter!!
What you’ll need:
- Rice Bowls – Look for ones that are deep and where you can see the outside of the bowl easily. I got these at Spotlight.
- Porcelain Paint – I used Pebo Porcelaine 150 Glossy paints in: Emerald (Green), Ruby Red and Citrine Yellow from Spotlight
- Thin Washi Tape (or masking tape) – these are 7mm thick – I already owned these
- Paint Brushes – I preferred flat brushes for this project in 1″ and 1/2″. I picked up a set at Spotlight from Princeton Art & Brush Co.
- Cardboard or Protective Surface to paint on
- Small Cup of Water for rinsing the paint brushes afterwards and when changing colours
Note: Before beginning this tutorial – wash and dry your bowls so that they are free from any dust or sticky residue from stickers. This will make painting them easier!
How to for Pineapple Bowls:
- Prepare your area so that you’re ready to get painting your bowls. Get the Emerald and Citrine Yellow Porcelain paints and select your paint brushes and leave them to one side. Take your washi tape and stick it to your bowl on a diagonal making sure the tape goes all the way to the base. Create a wide criss-cross pattern around the bowl that leaves a triangle pattern at the top. Each triangle can be a different size.
- Now take the Emerald paint and a smaller flat brush and paint all the triangles that start at the outside lip. Only the triangles at the top should be in the Emerald. Leave to dry and then apply a second coat of the porcelain paint if you’d like a darker colour (I highly recommend the second coat).
- Once the Emerald is dry, now it’s time to paint the Citrine Yellow. Carefully place the bowl upside down, so the base is up, and start painting over all the gaps that are left around the washi tape with a larger brush. (Don’t paint over the emerald as the colours alter when mixed). Leave to dry and apply a second coat of the porcelain paint. Leave to dry fully.
- Carefully remove all the washi tape and leave to air dry as per the instructions on the paint bottle (24 hours). Then, following the instructions on the bottle, pop in your home oven at 150°C/300°F for 35mins to heat seal. Now you have fun pineapple bowls!
How to for Strawberry Bowls:
- Prepare your area so that you’re ready to get painting your bowls (if you haven’t already). Get the Emerald and Ruby Red Porcelain paints and select your paint brushes and leave them to one side. Take your washi tape and stick it to your bowl on a diagonal making sure the tape goes all the way to the base. Create a slim criss-cross pattern around the bowl that leaves a triangle pattern at the top. Each triangle can be a different size, but keeping them small and close together makes for a great pattern.
- Now take the Emerald paint and a smaller flat brush and paint all the triangles that start at the outside lip. Only the triangles at the top should be in the Emerald. Leave to dry and then apply a second coat of the porcelain paint if you’d like a darker colour (I highly recommend the second coat).
- Once the Emerald is dry, now it’s time to paint the Ruby Red. Carefully place the bowl upside down, so the base is up, and start painting over all the gaps that are left around the washi tape.
YAY! Now you have sweet strawberry bowls!
Thoughts on the project:
These were super fun to make and in choosing to keep the patterns quite simple, they turned out great. I was tempted to make them more complex but it can get tricky and overwhelming really quickly. I wanted something that was achievable without making too much mess or being really stressful. I think these would even make a good school holiday activity for older kids.
My biggest tip for making them look great would be to make sure that all the washi tape edges are stuck down so no paint can squish in underneath and leave a mark. Also remember that the paint needs to be on the outside of the bowls only, as the paints aren’t listed as food safe. That’s why they are great on bowls rather than plates.
These turned out super fun and I can’t wait to see how they look at my tutti fruity party! I’m thinking they might make great snack centrepieces for the tables!

Oh wow, great minds think alike! I was just wondering to myself if a project like this would be good for my almost 10yo’s birthday party. I think your pineapple and strawberry bowls would be very popular with her friends. :)

I like your bowls – just referencing the fruits rather than being too literal.
Kim-Marie says
I have an unfortunate lack of craft talent yet a strong creative streak. Yet even I could make these bowls, I think!
You’re super clever!
