Our craft rooms/creative spaces can be some of the most difficult rooms of the house to keep neat and tidy. The nature of craft and creativity is that it gets a bit messy. But the key is having somewhere to keep the craft supplies before you use them and have somewhere you can put them away again. This might seem super easy, but as I think many of us have learnt the hard way (including me) it’s not always the case!

There are just so many ways to organise your craft room and your craft supplies, but it all really depends on how much space you’re working with and what kinds of crafts you do. If you have your own craft space you could really go to town with your organisation and have shelving that is just for all of your crafty projects!
When it comes to what storage is right for you, you first need to think about how you use your space and what craft supplies you use the most. It’s a great idea to write a list of the craft supplies you have and begin to give them a number from most used to least used, because this will help you decide how and where you store them. Things that you don’t use very often can go at the back of any storage, where as something that you use almost daily would work much better being close to hand.
If you have plenty of space and can use a wall, a peg board is a fantastic way for you to store the craft supplies that you use often. Thinks like tapes, pens and pencils and just about anything that can fit into a pegboard basket would go well here. Here’s a really great example I found on Pinterest. In the case that your crafting becomes more than just a hobby, and you’ve got the space, having a dedicated set of shelves can be wonderful for keeping everything together. You could add plastic tubs to it to keep it neat and tidy, or just experiment until you find the best way that works for you.
If you’re more of a paper crafter, you might like to go for one of the drawer options. If you have lots, a chest of drawers that sits on the floor might be the perfect fit. You could organise each drawer by craft supply or even by possible project, if that’s more your style. Drawers are a great way to get things out of sight. Especially if you don’t go for the plastic see through versions.
Not everyone has a huge amount of space to craft in though, so if you’re looking for a way to neaten up your small craft space, then something like a set of plastic drawers that can sit on your desk or even some magazine files might work for you. Plastic tubs are fantastic for storing things under desks and in cupboards and can be easy to find if you label them correctly.
There’s always a bit of trial and error when it comes to deciding what you need, especially if you decide to go shopping before you’ve had a chance to think about what you need. Don’t worry, we’ve all been there! It might seem boring and slow to think about what you really want out of your craft storage, but it will work much better for you, and you’ll feel less stressed if you take the time to think about it first.
If you’re crafting with kids you might want to think about having a space that can easily change as they grow and the activities they want to do change with them. Some won’t need to change at all but others, like the height of your pegboard, might.
This is something that I’m working on designing for myself right now. It might take me a while as I have some furniture that I need to work around, But I hope to find the perfect solution (or something close to it) soon. Thinking about what you already have and could possibly re-purpose is a great way to save some money and possibly your sanity too. I often find storage boxes and other things that are no longer being used for what I originally bought them for that would be perfect for another room. It’s a great place to start!
Your craft space is likely to be as unique as the crafts you make, and that’s a good thing. We all work a little bit differently, so our storage will differently for each of us, depending on our needs. I can’t wait to have a super tidy craft room that will feel neat and tidy when I walk in. Ive got lots of ideas of what I want it to be but I think the space is to small for what I want to do or I just have to much stuff. I think I need to purge some of it first as I just get overwhelmed when I try to tackle it.
I think doing a little bit at a time helps! It can be overwhelming at first. Maybe draw yourself a floor plan with measurements and see if it your idea would work? x
I just used floorplanner and what I want to do fits but I still need to declutter first. Feeling a bit better knowing it will work
