Today’s fun activity as part of the 9 Fun Ways to Create a Happy Home series is to have a games day! If you celebrate Christmas and especially have little ones around, you may be inundated with new toys and games to play. Even if you don’t (on both counts) having a games day can be a nice way to connect with your family or friends and make some awesome memories. I know many of you will still have family gatherings today, but this is good for any day, really.
A games day is the perfect way to have a day that moves at the pace you want, depending on what you choose to do with it. If you have little ones you could let them have free play time with their new toys or you could try something as a group like a board game or a puzzle if you’re looking for a family/friends activity. If you like to try out the kids new toys, you could get the Lego out and build it together.
Games days are great for when the weather isn’t so great – either it’s raining or so hot that you just want to hide indoors. Melbourne is such a mixed bag, you could get either at this time of year! If it’s a bunch of adults hanging around together you could go old school with some Charades or Pictionary or even get the traditional board games like Scrabble or Monopoly out! No cheating! ;)
If you’ve got electronic games like a Wii you could have team competitions and see how much fun you can have. It doesn’t matter your age, these things can be a lot of fun to play together! Hopefully you don’t get someone like me on your Wii team, I’m not much good! (I’m great at Trivial Pursuit though, so win some, lose some – haha)
Here are some game ideas, in case you need them:
- Play with the new toys
- Pictionary
- Charades
- Games like Connect Four, Battleship or Guess Who?
- Games like Scrabble or Monopoly
- Card Games like Go Fish, Bullsh*t, Uno or Snap
- Trivial Pursuit
- Jenga
- Wii (or other electronic game)
- Lego
- Puzzles
- Playdoh
- Outdoor games like Frisbee or Soccer
- Trampoline
If you’re going to make a day of it, some easy to prepare snacks are a must and some delicious lunch too! Leftovers could be perfect if you have any from your celebrations! I think they’re a great day for sitting down to an informal, fun lunch where you can just have a laugh and share what you’re thankful for this year and what you’re looking forward to for the next year. A great time for some laughter and joy at just being home and being able to revel in it with the ones you love.
I love that you don’t have to over think it. It can just be a nice cruisey day where you just pick a game or activity that keeps you close to home and enjoying each others company.
Do you have games days? What’s your favourite game or activity? I’d love to hear. Tell me in the comments!
