Today is the last post of the 9 Fun Ways to Create a Happy Home series and we’re going to set some resolutions. I’m not usually a big fan of resolutions because often they are difficult to keep and a bit too far reaching, but I had an idea for these ones that hopefully won’t be either. These resolutions will be not for you, but for your happy home.
Since we’re all about trying to create a happier home and embracing the imperfections that make our lives what they are, I wanted to focus on 5 simple things that we can do each and every day that will make our own homes feel more like that place we want to be and less like a chore that we just want to walk away from (I know that’s how I feel sometimes, and that’s ok!)
The key to coming up with these resolutions for your happy home is to keep them simple. Stop for a moment and imagine what a happy home is for you and think of some simple actions that you can practice every day to make that a reality. Obviously things won’t always go to plan, but I have found that actively reminding myself that I want to laugh it off, or smile at the little things helps me get closer to that happy home I want.
Before you start that daydream, be sure to download your 5 Happy Home Goals for 2014 printable.
If it all feels a little too big, here are just some of the things you might like to add (if you live in a home with other people, you could all create this together):
- Make time every day to dance to your favourite songs
- Tidy for 15 minutes before bed so I wake up to a more organised home
- Give Hugs freely
- Stop and listen
- Plan what I can so tomorrow isn’t such a rush
- Look for the silver lining in even the worst day, even if it is just your pillow
- Give any disagreements a resolution as soon as possible
- Stop to smell the roses
- Spend 10 minutes in the back yard just enjoying the space
- Spend 10 minutes doing something you love
- Celebrate the little things
- Eat dinner together
- Turn off the TV and have a proper conversation (without smart phones)
- Tell someone you love them
- Write more snail mail
- Take a photo of your kids once a week to make a 52 album at the end of the year
They don’t have to be change-your-world-overnight actions, just little things that you can do each day or each week that you think will make your home run more smoothly or feel more light hearted. It doesn’t matter if you don’t get them done every day, it’s more that you start actively thinking of what you want your home to feel like and take some tiny steps towards that.
Put it up on your fridge or in your office if you want to really try to remember for the year. Decorate it so it’s less of a looming ‘task’ and more of something you want to be reminded of and remember to be kind to yourself about it.
I need to sit down today and think of what mine will be. I will also have my word for 2014 which I first told you about here! (It’s still ‘kick-ass!’ haha but I’ve also added ‘stronger’ because two can be better than one!)
What’s one thing on your list? I’d love to hear. Tell me in the comments!
If you do try this, I’d love to see a photo or hear about how it went! Tweet me your pics at: @danniellecresp or instagram me at: @dannielle with the hashtag: #9funwaystocreateahappyhome
I hope you have a wonderful and safe New Year’s celebration in whatever way you wish to celebrate and a fantastic and abundant 2014! I’ll see you back here on Thursday for an exciting start to the new year and the return of my favourite kind of post, the mini makeover! x
