Happy Saturday! Can you believe that it’s Christmas time already?! These Saturday posts aim to be short and sweet and a little bit behind-the-scenes, so you can find out a little more about what goes on around here at HQ and in my Happy Home. You can join in too if you like. There aren’t any prompts and it doesn’t have to be a Saturday, just one thing worth taking a photo of that makes your home feel happy this week (or anytime really).
This year I decided that I would bake a lot of the family gifts, rather than try to buy something for each family. Because we’re such a large bunch, and money is a little tighter this year, and my new found love for baking! I thought it could be fun to try something new. I saw this pin on Pinterest and thought the reindeer might be perfect to try.
I don’t like gingerbread, so I tweeted out asking for a sugar cookie recipe and one landed in my email inbox within an hour! It’s a Nigella recipe for “Butter cut-out biscuits” and tastes like the perfect shortbread. I went searching the shops for a gingerbread man cookie cutter that didn’t have a round belly (to make my reindeer) and finally found one in a 3 pack with a snowflake and a Christmas tree. The recipe was so easy to make, I don’t think I’ve ever had so much fun in the kitchen.
All up I made about 150 cookies, and will be decorating all the reindeer this way. I love that I can give them different facial expressions just for the fun of it! The noses and eyes are mini m&ms that will be stuck down with royal icing. These were decorated with gels, which I learnt the hard way that they don’t set. But still taste delicious!
I’ve had so much fun baking these and learning to decorate them, it’s really helped keep up my Christmas spirit! Can’t wait to finish decorating them and gifting them all on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day!
It’s my birthday tomorrow so I’ll be taking a break from all things Christmas to celebrate turning another year older and reflecting on a big year!
