If you’ve ever had a big life dream and woken up one day and realised that’s not at all what you want for your life anymore, you’re in great company (if I may talk myself up for a moment ;) )
One day in April, 2012, this exact thing happened to me. I woke up, looked around and wondered how on earth I ended up living a life so far from what I’d dreamed of. I didn’t even want that dream any more but I knew that I wanted something more than ‘this’.
At first I didn’t know what I wanted to do, so I did what any crazy self-employed person does when they feel like their dream won’t work: I searched Seek for full time jobs. I applied for two, interviewed for one, and started working there 3 weeks later.
June rolled around and brought winter with it. Even with this new job I was still soul searching for what was next, then it came to me: I needed to shake my foundations and do something so ambitious (to me) that it would change my life. I would plan a move to Canada for 2 years and visit as many US states as I could afford. I’d go to my dream design conference, Altitude Design Summit, and I’d do what ever it took to make it happen.
So it began. I took that scary life changing dream and broke all the steps down until they were just simple tasks that I could do in one evening or on a Saturday. I continued working not only at the day job but was working nights on my own web design business. I worked for the money (reminded myself constantly WHY I was doing it) and I saved like crazy. I blogged about it on my personal blog and I brought people along for the ride.
7 months and $18,000 (that I saved up) later, I boarded a plane bound for Las Vegas via LAX and my 27 Adventure began. I attended Altitude Design Summit and visited friends all over the USA. My dream came true. I got to Canada and the plan began to unravel. There was no work and nowhere to stay. It was rough and I had a decision to make. Now that I’d shaken my foundations to the core, what did I really want? (and would I find it in Canada?)
After 3 long days of walking through the cold streets of Toronto torn about what to do, I realised that the future I was dreaming of was right back where I started. I made the tough, but oh so right, decision to come home to the country I loved and the city that makes my heart sing. Melbourne is, was and probably always will be my home and Australia finally felt after many searching years, like it was where I was meant to be. If I could just get home before going broke, the rest would fall in to place.
In coming home I realised that what I’m meant to be doing is helping other people to find and realise their own big crazy dreams and find what makes them happy. Not only your career but your life. We spend so much of our lives working that I believe (as did Steve Jobs) that we should be doing something that we love. I also believe that that can and will change and grow as we do. and there’s nothing wrong in that!
I didn’t really find big dream until recently (around the time I started this blog and I’ve been honing it since), but I do believe that it’s worth taking your big vision off that pedestal of ‘maybe one day’, and bringing it down to the ‘just one step (or bite) at a time’. Because, crazy as it seems, a series of small actions over time lead to something so much bigger and often you look back and wonder how you made it so far without any big leaps. That is an amazing feeling, believe me!
Because I’m so passionate about helping others to also find this, I’ve created a workshop to help you get from ‘what is my big crazy vision anyway?’ to an actionable step by step, non scary, plan that lets you get closer to your dream, one bite at a time. I’m hoping to run this in different locations across Australia in 2014, but I am holding a trial workshop in Melbourne on Saturday, October 19 from 10am-1pm.
We’ll be creating our own vision boards that will help to keep you on track, as well as making that awesome action plan all for you to keep. All materials will be provided and some treats will also be available to keep our enthusiasm and fun levels up. It will be a small group of ladies and we will be sure to make it lighthearted and friendly.
You don’t need to know what your big vision is, but I’d love to have you come along if you’ve got that far and want some help with the ‘how’ of turning it into a reality. Because it’s a trial, all participants will receive the special trial price of $40 (which is 50% off the full price). I’d love to have you come along and be a part of this from the beginning. I’m really excited so share this workshop with you and can’t wait to see where your vision takes you!
If you’re thinking to yourself: Hells Yes! This is so what I’m looking for! I’m in! You can reserve your spot and buy now.
If you’re thinking: I’m pretty sure I want in, but I just have a couple of questions, email me right here, and I’ll reply as soon as I can.
Or if you’re thinking that you love this idea but: a) you’re not in Melbourne; or b) you’re already on the right track with your vision; I’d love if you’d share it with people you think this might be perfect for.
I hope to see some of you at my workshop soon! Until then, keep dreaming big. x
You won’t miss out on anything by being in the trial group, it will still be the full workshop run with all the enthusiasm and passion I have, in case you were worried. x
UPDATE: This workshop is no longer available. Thanks for your understanding. x
